Jill Scott is the only daughter of her mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia in Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. Since she was the only child She was also raised with her grandmother, who was also maternal. Scott completed her studies at The Philadelphia High School for Girls. After that, she attended Temple University. Scott was a student in secondary school and also worked at two different positions. She wanted to be the high school's English teacher. She had a dream of becoming a high-school English teacher, was cut short after she dropped out of school. A poet by trade, she began performing in poetry performances live. Then she joined with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form a group. You Got Me, their joint song, was written by the duo. Through a Roots performance, she declared herself as an artist. Then she secured collaborations including with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She was also able to gain knowledge of the stage when she performed in the Canada tour of the Broadway show Rent. The label signed her as its first artist.
